There's one scenario that shows up several times a month in our August and September schedules, and it always begins with the same frustration: "I get bitten every morning, I've taken the bed apart, flipped the base, called in a company — nothing. Not a single bug."
In a significant share of these cases, the problem isn't the bed. It's the ceiling, the ventilation duct or the roller-shutter housing. More precisely: a pigeon nest, occupied or abandoned, sitting a few dozen centimetres from the living space. The birds leave, their parasites stay — and those parasites go looking for a replacement host. That host is you.
This mechanism is well documented in occupational medicine and dermatology alike, yet it remains largely unknown to the general public. It deserves explaining, because it completely changes the treatment strategy.

The feral pigeon: a flatmate that never arrives alone
A species perfectly adapted to Paris-region buildings
The urban feral pigeon (Columba livia, domestic form) descends from a cliff-dwelling bird: originally, it nested in rock crevices. A Haussmann-era building, with its cornices, small balconies, dormer windows and disused attics, reproduces that habitat exactly. This is why no dense European city has ever managed to durably reduce its pigeon population through scaring tactics alone.
A pair can produce four to six broods a year in our climate, with a breeding season running from February to October which, in heated buildings or insulated lofts, sometimes continues all year round. Each nest is reused, topped up with twigs, droppings and eggshell remains, until it forms a compact mass weighing several kilos.
That mass is an ecosystem. It hosts:
- blood-feeding mites, first among them the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae), also known as the "red louse";
- bird bugs (Cimex columbarius, a very close relative of the bed bug Cimex lectularius);
- fleas, notably Ceratophyllus columbae;
- argasid ticks (soft ticks) in certain old dovecotes;
- dermestid beetles and nest moths, which feed on feathers and keratin debris;
- moulds and yeasts including Cryptococcus neoformans, associated with dried droppings.
What triggers the move into the home
As long as the pigeons occupy the nest, the parasites stay put: the food supply is right there. The switch happens at two very specific moments.
The first is fledging or nest abandonment — typically in late summer, when the last brood leaves the site. The second is a badly handled intervention: a façade renovation, netting installation, an abrupt pigeon clearance or gutter cleaning that drives the birds away without treating the substrate.
In both cases, thousands of starving mites start moving. The red mite survives six to eight months without a blood meal depending on temperature, and it readily travels several metres. It follows ducts, cracks, cable runs, roller-shutter boxes. It ends up in the bedroom.
Field rule: bites that appear suddenly in a home where nothing has changed — no travel, no second-hand furniture, no visitors — should prompt you to look up and outwards before dismantling the bed.
Recognising an infestation of avian origin
The bites don't look like bed bug bites
This is the point that trips most people up. Red mite lesions are often described as intensely itchy, small papules, scattered without the characteristic alignment of bed bug bites (the famous "breakfast, lunch, dinner" row of three). They readily affect the neck, arms, trunk and sometimes the scalp.

One practical detail: the red mite is nocturnal and avoids light. It often drops down from the ceiling. That's why residents sometimes describe bites on the face and shoulders rather than the legs.
The sticky-tape and torch test
Before concluding anything, you have to see the creature. Two simple steps are enough, and they cost nothing:
- Run a wide-beam LED torch at a grazing angle across the ceiling, around the light fitting, behind the headboard and over the roller-shutter box, between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Red mites appear as moving red or grey dots, the size of a grain of ground pepper.
- Lay strips of double-sided sticky tape on the floor along the skirting boards, around the bed legs and beneath the light fitting. After two nights, examine the strips with a magnifier.
An illuminated high-magnification magnifier makes this diagnosis far more reliable: at 0.7 mm, telling a mite from a speck of dust is otherwise guesswork. It's the same tool you'll use later to check that the treatment is working.

The real health risks, without the drama
Here we need to separate what is common from what is rare.
Common: dermatitis. The bites cause intense itching, scratch lesions and sometimes a bacterial superinfection. The main impact is insomnia and anxiety — the same vicious circle described for bed bugs. Vidal and Ameli point out that symptomatic treatment relies on antihistamines and, on medical advice, a short course of topical corticosteroids: the only thing that solves the problem for good is eliminating the source.
Less common but documented: exposure to dried droppings. Cleaning up large accumulations in a loft or a courtyard releases dust containing fungal spores and organic fragments. The INRS classifies such operations as work involving a biological risk, with histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis and avian chlamydiosis (ornithosis-psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia psittaci) as the main concerns. These conditions remain rare in the general population, but they mainly affect immunocompromised people and unprotected workers.
What isn't true: the pigeon is not a "flying rat" carrying a cocktail of diseases transmissible by mere proximity. Santé publique France records no urban epidemic attributable to this mechanism. The risk is one of occupational exposure and direct contact with droppings, not a neighbourhood risk.
Hence a common-sense rule: nobody should remove a nest or sweep up dried droppings without a disposable FFP3 mask, nitrile gloves and safety goggles, and without first dampening the surface to prevent dust becoming airborne.
What the regulations say
The urban feral pigeon is not a protected species in its domestic form, but its management is regulated. Three points shape the legal reality in Île-de-France:
- Feeding is prohibited by the departmental sanitary regulations (article 120 of the standard RSD) and by numerous municipal by-laws, including those of the City of Paris. It is the most effective upstream measure — and the hardest to enforce.
- Destroying occupied nests is not something to improvise: work should ideally take place outside the brooding season, or be entrusted to a professional, since scaring and capture are strictly regulated.
- Maintenance of common areas and façades is the responsibility of the managing agent or the owner. A tenant suffering a mite infestation originating from a nest in the roof or a cornice must report the situation in writing — decree no. 2002-120 on decent housing requires the absence of pests and parasites, an obligation reinforced by the ELAN law.
In practice, a recorded letter with acknowledgement of receipt to the managing agent or landlord, accompanied by dated photographs and a doctor's record of the bites, turns an "invisible" problem into an enforceable case. That is often what unlocks the building's budget.

The correct order of operations
The costliest mistake is doing things in the wrong order. Fitting anti-pigeon netting on an infested façade without treating the substrate amounts to shutting the parasites in on the home's side. We have seen cases where bites exploded within the week following the installation of an exclusion system.
The correct sequence is as follows.
1. Treat before excluding
An acaricide treatment is first applied to the nests and their surroundings, left to act, after which the nests are dampened, bagged and disposed of as waste. Only then are the physical protections installed.
2. Clean and disinfect the substrate
Wet scraping, vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered machine, then disinfection. A vacuum cleaner with HEPA filtration is no luxury here: a standard household vacuum blows the finest particles straight back out — precisely the ones that cause the problem. The bag is then sealed airtight and disposed of immediately.
3. Prevent their return
The devices that genuinely work, in decreasing order of effectiveness:
- Netting: the only truly durable solution for a courtyard, an enclosed balcony or a recess. 50 mm mesh, correct tension, stainless steel anchor points.
- Spikes: effective on narrow linear surfaces (window ledges, cornices). Useless on wide surfaces, where pigeons simply build between the points. That said, a correctly sized strip of stainless steel anti-pigeon spikes remains the simplest solution for an individual window ledge.
- Tensioned wires and spring systems: discreet, suited to architecturally protected façades.
- Sealing off openings: grilles over loft entrances, ventilation openings and cat flaps. This is where the most problematic nests are found, because they connect directly to the living space.
What doesn't work, or no longer does: repellent gels (short lifespan, messy), plastic birds of prey (pigeons get used to them within days), ultrasound — ANSES has published several opinions reiterating the lack of evidence for the effectiveness of sound repellents against urban pests.
4. Treat the inside of the home
Once the source has been removed, the residual population indoors must be eliminated. Unlike bed bugs, red mites don't survive indefinitely: deprived of birds, they die within a few months — but those few months are unbearable. An acaricide treatment targeting their pathways — skirting boards, shutter boxes, light-fitting surrounds, ducts — speeds up resolution considerably.
For residents, two measures genuinely help during the transition phase:
- wash bed linen at 60 °C and store it clean inside anti-mite mattress covers with a zip closure, which deny any remaining parasites access to the host at night;
- vacuum the ceiling and cornices daily, something almost nobody does spontaneously.
The Île-de-France calendar: why September is the critical month
The year's last brood generally leaves the nest between mid-August and the end of September. That is mechanically the period when nests empty out and parasites disperse. Add a thermal factor: cool September nights push mites towards heated spaces, exactly as they push mice towards cellars and cockroaches towards ducts.
So it is right now, between late August and early October, that residential buildings should have their façades and lofts surveyed. An assessment at this time of year costs infinitely less than an emergency treatment campaign across six flats in November.
Three questions to ask before any intervention:
- Does the contractor treat the substrate before installing the protections?
- Are nests removed using a wet method, with personal protective equipment?
- Does the quote include a follow-up inspection at three and six weeks, with monitoring traps placed in the flats?
If the answer to any of the three is vague, find another contractor.
In summary
A pigeon nest is not a cosmetic problem. It is a reservoir of blood-feeding parasites installed a few metres from a bedroom, and the end of summer is precisely when that reservoir empties inwards. Recognising the mechanism saves months of diagnostic wandering, pointless bed bug treatments and invoices with no effect.
The right reflex fits in a single sentence: when the bites have no explanation at bed level, look up. And treat the source before closing the door behind it.
