Travel: how to avoid bringing home bed bugs

Bed bugs don't fly or jump: they travel. Luggage, clothes and bags are their favourite means of transport. That's why trips — holidays, business travel, short-term rentals — are the main route of spread. A few simple reflexes greatly reduce the risk.

On arrival: inspect the room

Before unpacking, take five minutes to check the risk areas:

  • the mattress seams and label;
  • the headboard and skirting boards near the bed;
  • the box spring and bedside tables.

Look for small black spots, blood marks or brown insects the size of an apple seed.

During the stay: good habits

  • Place your suitcase on a metal luggage rack, away from the bed and walls.
  • Avoid putting clothes and bags on the bed or carpet.
  • Keep dirty laundry in a closed bag.

A single bed bug brought home in a suitcase can be enough to start a new infestation.

Back home: the decisive precautions

Once home, don't unpack the suitcase in the bedroom. Run laundry through a hot dryer (60 °C) for 30 minutes, vacuum the suitcase and store it away from living areas (garage, cellar). At the slightest doubt in the following weeks, react quickly: request a diagnosis from our technicians.

For frequent travellers, a suitcase cover and a travel treatment spray make a useful backup protection.
