Ants in the Kitchen in September: Why Autumn Triggers a Second Wave of Invasion

There's one sentence we hear every year from the first week of September onwards, and it always makes us smile: "it's strange, we had ants in June, things settled down all summer, and now they're back — but ten times worse." The customer is convinced this is a new infestation. It isn't. It's exactly the same colony, in the same place, that has simply changed its menu.

Ants are probably the most misunderstood pest in French homes. People treat them as a springtime seasonal nuisance, when in fact the most critical period — the one when they pour into kitchens, cupboards and service ducts — falls between late August and late October. Understanding that shift is the key to understanding why an aerosol bought at the supermarket solves the problem for four days and brings it back worse.

Why ants come back in force in autumn

A colony's feeding cycle, in one minute

An ant colony doesn't have a fixed diet: it eats according to what it needs at any given moment.

  • March–May: emergence from overwintering. The queen starts laying again, and there are larvae to feed. Larvae need protein and fat. Workers hunt insects and collect crumbs of meat, cheese and pet kibble.
  • June–July: peak growth and swarming. This is the season of "flying ants" — the winged reproductives that leave the nest in their thousands on a hot, muggy day. Spectacular, but completely harmless.
  • Late August–October: egg-laying slows. There are fewer and fewer larvae to feed, so less and less need for protein. On the other hand, the adult workers and the queen have to build up energy reserves to get through winter. They switch to a heavily sugar-based diet.
  • November–February: the colony enters diapause, slows its metabolism and lives off its reserves. Unless — and this is the whole problem — it has settled inside a heated building.

That shift to sugar in September is the key to everything. Outdoors, sugary resources are becoming scarce: the aphids whose honeydew ants "milk" are declining, fallen fruit is rotting away, nectar-bearing flowers are fading. And three metres away, there's your kitchen: a poorly sealed jar of jam, a smear of syrup on the worktop, the cat's bowl, the trail of sugar under the coffee machine. To a colony, that's an inexhaustible calorie deposit.

Warmth, the second trigger

The second factor arrives with the first cool nights, generally in mid-September in the Île-de-France region. Ants are ectotherms: their activity depends directly on temperature. A nest built under a terrace or in a north-facing wall sees its activity collapse as soon as the average drops below 12–13 °C.

The colony then has two options: slow down, or move towards a stable source of heat. Electrical conduits, heated crawl spaces, the back of a dishwasher, the underside of an induction hob, the insulated lining of a wall backing onto a communal boiler room: these are all microclimates sitting at 20–25 °C all year round. A colony that finds one of these doesn't leave in spring. It becomes permanent.

Identify the species before treating — otherwise nothing works

This is mistake number one, and it explains 80% of failed DIY treatments. Not all ants are treated the same way, and some really must not be treated the same way.

The black garden ant (Lasius niger)

The most common species in mainland France. Black to dark brown, 3 to 5 mm, it nests outdoors: under a terrace slab, in a low wall, at the foot of a wall, under a flowerpot. It comes in to feed and leaves again. The colony has a single queen and a few thousand workers.

The good news: it is relatively easy to eliminate with a suitable bait, provided you find and treat the outdoor nest.

The pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis)

Very small (2 mm), amber-yellow, almost translucent. It lives exclusively indoors, in heated buildings: apartment blocks, hospitals, commercial kitchens, social housing. It's the bane of our trade.

Why? Because it is polygynous (several queens per colony) and above all because it practises budding: if you attack it with a contact insecticide, the colony splits into several sub-colonies that scatter in every direction. You had one nest in the kitchen; three weeks later, you have five spread over two floors. In a co-owned building, this is exactly how a problem in one flat contaminates an entire stairwell.

Remember this principle: against pharaoh ants, an insecticide aerosol is strictly counterproductive.

The carpenter ant (Camponotus spp.)

Large (6 to 15 mm), black or two-toned. It doesn't eat wood — unlike termites — but it hollows it out to house its colony, favouring wood that is already damp: roof timbers under a leak, a poorly sealed window frame, a beam in contact with damp masonry.

The tell-tale sign: very fine, almost powdery sawdust piled at the foot of woodwork, sometimes mixed with insect fragments. This isn't a pest problem, it's the symptom of a structural damp problem. Treating the ants without fixing the leak is like repainting a cracked façade.

The five mistakes that make an infestation drag on

1. Squashing the workers you see

Visible ants represent, according to standard entomological estimates, less than 10% of the colony. They are the foragers. Killing them does nothing to the queen, who simply lays replacements. Worse: a crushed ant releases alarm pheromones that can alter the group's behaviour.

2. Spraying a contact insecticide on the trails

This is the classic mistake. You kill the foragers, the chemical trail is destroyed, and for a few days everything seems fixed. But the colony itself is intact — and the attack can trigger budding in polygynous species. You turn a single focus into several scattered ones.

3. Cleaning without destroying the trail

An ant trail is a chemical motorway laid down in pheromones. A wipe with a sponge and plain water won't erase it. You need a degreasing cleaner or an alcohol-based solution to break down the trace. Many of our customers see a clear improvement simply by systematically wiping down every surface with concentrated household white vinegar after meals — it isn't a treatment, but it is a genuine disruptor of their communication.

4. Treating indoors only

If the nest is outside (the most common case with Lasius niger), the indoors is just a self-service buffet. As long as the colony isn't reached, the flow rebuilds itself within 48 hours.

5. Using a bait that's wrong for the season

This is the point the whole article could have been reduced to: in September, a protein bait doesn't work. The colony is after sugar. A sugar-based gel bait, placed along active trails, will on the contrary be consumed in quantity and carried back to the nest through trophallaxis — that mouth-to-mouth regurgitation of food which distributes the active substance throughout the colony, queen included.

The method that works: feeding the colony to wipe it out

The principle of a professional treatment is counter-intuitive. We're not trying to kill quickly. We want the colony to carry the product itself all the way to its queen. That requires an active substance with a delayed effect: if the worker dies on the spot, nothing gets passed on.

Step 1 — Map before you act

For 24 to 48 hours, treat nothing. Observe, note the times they pass and the entry points. Ants are most active in the early morning and in the evening. A strip of clear adhesive paper laid along a skirting board is often enough to pinpoint the exact entry point.

Step 2 — Remove the resources

  • Sugary foods in airtight containers, including caster sugar, honey and syrups.
  • The pet's bowl removed between meals (or placed in a saucer of water, which ants won't cross).
  • Bin with a lid, taken out every evening during the treatment phase.
  • Worktop degreased, drains rinsed, under appliances vacuumed — that's often where the invisible resource is hiding.

Storing food in airtight food storage containers isn't a cosmetic detail: it's what makes the bait more attractive than the rest of the kitchen.

Step 3 — Bait, then leave it alone

Place small amounts of sugary gel bait beside the trails, never on them, on a removable support (a square of baking parchment, an upturned bottle cap). Then let it work. Seeing a swarm of ants on the bait in the first few days isn't a failure: it's exactly the result you want. The activity peak lasts 3 to 7 days, then the collapse is dramatic.

Spray nothing nearby: a contact insecticide would make the bait repellent and cancel out the whole protocol.

Step 4 — Seal the access points

Once the colony is wiped out, you seal up: silicone sealant around pipe runs under the sink, filler on skirting board cracks, a door brush strip, fine mesh over air vents. A silicone caulking gun and half a day will generally deal with every entry point in a standard kitchen.

The special case of apartment blocks and businesses

In a detached house, a Lasius niger infestation can almost always be sorted out on your own with a rigorous protocol. In co-owned buildings and premises open to the public, the logic changes completely.

Why flat-by-flat treatment fails

In an apartment block, colonies travel through service ducts, wall cavities and soil stacks. Treatment carried out only in the complaining flat pushes the problem next door, and that neighbour will call three weeks later. It's exactly the pattern we see with bedbugs or German cockroaches, and the answer is the same: treatment has to be coordinated across the whole stairwell, communal areas included.

For a managing agent or a landlord, that means appointing a firm for an entire riser rather than multiplying one-off call-outs — more expensive at first glance, far cheaper over twelve months.

In a commercial kitchen: a compliance failure

In the catering sector, the presence of ants in a food-handling area is a breach of the Hygiene Package (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004), which requires documented pest control procedures. A DDPP report noting "presence of ants on worktops" is enough to trigger a formal notice. The food safety management plan must include a formalised pest control plan, with dated records and safety data sheets for the products used.

In practical terms, for a professional: an annual contract, a trapping plan, and above all traceability. A hygiene monitoring file kept up to date and producible within three minutes during an inspection is worth more than the best undocumented treatment.

Preventing the September wave… from August onwards

A few structural measures drastically reduce the risk, and they need to be put in place before the seasonal shift.

  • Clear the surroundings. Keep a one-metre "clean strip" at the foot of façades: no woodpiles, no flowerpots pushed up against the wall, no thick mulch. The nest needs shelter against the masonry.
  • Cut back vegetation touching the building. A branch or an ivy stem touching the façade is a direct bridge to a first-floor window.
  • Watch out for aphids. An ant colony "farming" aphids on a rose bush or a lime tree near a terrace has an objective reason to stay there. An insecticidal black soap for plants applied to infested plants removes the resource at source.
  • Hunt down damp. A leak under the sink, a tired bath seal, seepage at the base of a wall: this is what attracts carpenter ants and weakens the structure. A simple indoor hygrometer placed in a utility room or a cellar gives an objective reading of what the nose doesn't always detect.
  • Seal up before the first cold spell. September is the right month: the colony hasn't settled indoors yet.

When to call a professional

Not every situation warrants an intervention. A few trails of black ants on a terrace in September is normal biology. On the other hand, call if:

  • the ants are tiny and yellowish, and present all year round (suspected pharaoh ants);
  • you notice fine sawdust at the foot of woodwork or roof timbers;
  • the infestation affects several dwellings in the same building;
  • you run a commercial kitchen, a nursery, a care home or a healthcare facility;
  • two properly conducted baiting cycles have produced no result.
