There's one call that comes back every year, almost on the same date, and it never matches what the caller thinks they're describing.
"We've got gnats all over the kitchen. We threw everything out, cleaned everything, and they're back within two days."
Nine times out of ten, the person really has cleaned everything. The worktop is spotless, the fruit bowl is empty, the bin has been washed with bleach. And yet, by 6 p.m., there are twenty-odd little flies circling above the sink again.
Because the breeding site was never in the fruit bowl. It was fifteen centimetres below the drain, in a biofilm no one ever sees.
Between mid-September and the start of November, this scenario repeats itself in thousands of homes across the Paris region. The grape harvest, autumn fruit, still-mild daytime temperatures and the heating coming back on in the evening create a perfect cocktail. And because the word "gnat" is used in everyday speech for at least three different insects, most people end up treating the wrong problem.

Three insects, three breeding sites, three treatments
The fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), also called the "vinegar fly"
This is the star of the autumn. Two to three millimetres long, ochre to brown body, very visible red eyes under a magnifier or in a smartphone photo, with a slow, erratic flight at worktop height.
It is drawn not to the fruit itself but to fermentation: the yeasts that develop on ripe fruit, in the dregs of a wine glass, in a damp cloth soaked with juice, in the kitchen compost caddy. Its sense of smell detects acetic acid and ethanol from tens of metres away.
Its life cycle is the real problem: at 25 °C, a female lays around 400 eggs and the full generation — egg, larva, pupa, adult — takes 8 to 10 days. At 20 °C, reckon on 15 days. In other words, if you don't cut off reproduction, every week multiplies the population by a double-digit factor.
The fungus gnat (Sciaridae), or "plant gnat"
This one is systematically mistaken for a fruit fly, and the treatment has nothing in common.

Fungus gnat larvae live in the top 3 centimetres of the potting mix and feed on decomposing organic matter and fine roots. The back-to-school season is their peak: plants come in from the balcony, generous watering resumes even though evaporation has dropped, and the substrate stays permanently damp. You can clean the kitchen for a month — as long as the ficus is waterlogged, it will carry on.

Here we change scale: 6 to 8 mm, noisy, banging against the windows.
In September and October, adult flies look for shelter to overwinter. They cluster on south-facing façades in the late afternoon, then get in through loft spaces, roller-shutter boxes and gaps in the building envelope. This is the "attic fly" phenomenon, particularly marked in the outer suburbs and peri-urban areas, near farms or hedgerows.
A swarm of large flies in a loft bedroom in October almost never means there is something dirty in the house. It means there is an entry point and a warm room.
A rarer case, but never to be ruled out: a sudden swarm of blue bottle flies (Calliphora) in a closed room, with no visible food source, should raise the possibility of a rodent carcass inside a partition wall, a suspended ceiling or under a floor. That is a job in its own right, and it's a smell you recognise before you even open the hatch.
Why September–October and not July
Three factors stack up, and none of them is the one people cite spontaneously.
1. Fruit ripeness. Grapes, figs, plums, pears, windfall apples: fermentable sugar content peaks at this time of year. The fruit flies outdoors — often present in considerable densities around vineyards, orchards and even community-garden compost bins — are autumn populations, at their annual maximum.
2. The temperature differential. Nights drop below 12 °C while interiors stay at 20–22 °C. Flying insects follow the heat gradient and the light. Every window opened in the evening, with a lamp on, is an invitation.
3. Composting and food-waste sorting. The widespread rollout of separate food-waste collection, mandatory for local authorities since 2024, has multiplied the number of kitchen caddies. Ecologically this is an excellent thing, but an unventilated caddy emptied every five days is a laboratory-grade fruit fly farm. The fix isn't to stop sorting: it's a compost caddy with a charcoal filter and an emptying rhythm of 48 hours maximum in September and October.
Finding the real breeding site: the 15-minute method
Before treating, you have to locate. Here is the exact order in which we inspect a kitchen, from the most common to the rarest.
- The sink drain and trap. Run a finger or a brush around the inside wall of the drain. If you come back with a brownish-grey jelly-like deposit, that's biofilm, and it's a major egg-laying site both for drain flies (Psychodidae) and for fruit flies.
- The dishwasher seal and filter. Food residue + moisture + warmth.
- Underneath and behind the bin, not just inside it. Liquid that has run down between the unit and the wall never dries out.
- Bottles awaiting recycling: the dregs of a beer or a glass of wine left out on the balcony are enough.
- Potatoes, onions and shallots stored on the floor of a low cupboard. A single rotten tuber at the bottom of the bag is a classic and completely invisible breeding site.
- Plant potting soil: lay a thin slice of raw potato on the substrate and lift it off 48 hours later. If small white larvae with black heads are clinging to it, they're fungus gnats.
- The fridge's fruit drawer and cloths rolled up in the laundry basket.
If nothing turns up in the kitchen and the flies are large, go upstairs: loft, shutter boxes, service ducts.
The 10-day protocol
The aim is not to kill the adults you can see — they will die within two to four weeks anyway. The aim is to prevent the next generation. That's why we think in terms of a cycle, over 10 to 14 days.
Days 1–2: eliminate egg-laying sites
- Empty, wash and dry every fruit container. Anything cut into or blemished goes in the outdoor bin, not the food-waste caddy.
- Pour a solution of very hot water with bicarbonate of soda, then white vinegar, down every drain, leave it to work, then rinse. The purpose is both mechanical and chemical: to lift the biofilm. A flexible brush for traps and drains does more work here than any product.
- Clean the dishwasher filter and leave the door ajar for 24 hours.
- Take the bin out, wash the container and the floor underneath it.
Days 2–10: mass trapping of adults
This is the phase people skip, and it's the one that changes the curve.
The homemade trap works very well: a glass with 2 cm of cider vinegar, a drop of washing-up liquid (it breaks the surface tension so the insect sinks instead of landing), covered with cling film pricked with pinholes. Set out three to five, not just one: near the sink, near the plants, near the bin.
For heavily infested homes or professional kitchens, a UV light trap with a glue board placed 1.5 m above the floor, away from openings, catches without insecticide and without spatter — and it is in fact the only solution accepted under most food-safety management plans in catering.
For adult house flies, insecticide-free fly-paper strips remain formidably effective in a loft or a conservatory, provided you put up several and replace them regularly.
Days 3–14: treating plants, if fungus gnats
- Let the top 2–3 cm of potting mix dry out between waterings. This is the most effective measure, and it's free.
- Cover the surface of the pot with 1 cm of coarse sand or clay pebbles: the females can no longer lay eggs in contact with the substrate.
- Yellow sticky traps catch the adults and above all serve as an indicator: when the boards stop filling up, the cycle is broken.
- In cases of heavy infestation, a biological treatment based on nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) applied as a soil drench settles the larval problem with no chemicals at all.
Day 10: checkpoint
Count the catches over 24 hours and compare with day 3. A drop of less than 70 % means a breeding site has been missed. Go back through the inspection list — and think about the bag of potatoes.
Exclusion: sealing up the house before winter
For autumn flies, everything hinges on the building fabric, and the window for action is precisely now, before they settle into diapause.
- Insect screens on the windows you use most in the evening, October included: a magnetic window insect screen fits without drilling and comes off again in spring.
- Fill the gaps around roller-shutter boxes and cable entries with a suitable sealant or foam.
- Fine mesh (1 mm) over loft air inlets and ventilation grilles — without ever blocking them, as ventilation remains mandatory.
- Check door bottoms and thresholds.
Is there a health risk to worry about?
It needs to be kept in proportion without being dismissed.
The fruit fly doesn't bite, transmits no documented human disease and causes no material damage. The issue is comfort and food hygiene: it mechanically carries yeasts and bacteria from one surface to another, which speeds up food spoilage.
The house fly, on the other hand, is a recognised mechanical vector. It alternates between landing on faeces and on food, and regurgitates in order to feed. Santé publique France and ANSES regularly list it among potential vectors of enteric pathogens (salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter). That is why its presence in catering premises is grounds for non-compliance during a health inspection, not a mere nuisance.
Fungus gnats are harmless to humans; they mainly damage young plants and seedlings.
Finally, a word on aerosol insecticides. Spraying an aerosol in a kitchen has three effects: it kills the adults present, it contaminates food-contact surfaces, and it reaches no eggs and no larvae. Two days later, the swarm is back. ANSES regularly points out that untargeted domestic use of biocides needlessly exposes occupants, particularly children and pregnant women. For a fly problem in a home, the mechanical approach — removing the breeding site + trapping — is both more effective and safer.
When to call in a professional
In the vast majority of cases, the protocol above is enough. We step in when:
- the swarm persists beyond three weeks despite a full inspection (there is then an inaccessible breeding site: a floor gully, a leaking pipe, a crawl space, a riser service duct);
- it involves an entire building, with a fouled shared waste stack — that's a matter for the building's management, not an individual flat;
- it involves commercial premises subject to a food-safety management plan, where documented proof of pest control is required;
- a swarm of blue bottle flies appears with no explanation, with or without a smell: you then have to find the carcass, and it's often a rodent that died after a badly calibrated rat-control campaign.
The rest of the time, remember the only rule that matters: you don't beat flies by killing the ones you can see. You beat them by removing the damp, sugary, warm spot where they were planning to lay their eggs tonight.
