Cockroaches in the Dishwasher, Fridge and Coffee Machine: The Nests Nobody Thinks to Treat

When we open a cockroach callout file in the Île-de-France region, the sentence that comes up most often isn't "they're everywhere." It's: "we've treated three times and they always come back." And in the vast majority of those cases, the previous treatment wasn't bad. It was simply applied in the wrong place.

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) doesn't live in the pantry cupboard. It lives inside the things that get warm. A dishwasher motor, a refrigerator compressor, the boiler of an espresso machine, the electronic board of a built-in oven: these are cavities, dry or damp depending on the spot, held between 26 and 34 °C all year round, out of reach of any vacuum, never cleaned, and riddled with 2 to 4 millimetre gaps. In other words, the ideal habitat, described point by point.

Why cockroaches colonise appliances before cupboards

The heat–humidity–confinement triad

A German cockroach looks for three things at once: a high temperature, a water source within a few metres, and a space where its back and belly touch a surface at the same time. That last point is called thigmotaxis: the insect feels safe when it is squeezed. That's why it prefers a 3 mm crack to a large empty cavity.

Now look at the underside of a dishwasher: lukewarm drain circuit, sound-insulating foam, sheathed wiring harness, collection tray. Residual heat after every cycle, permanent humidity, dozens of crevices. The pasta cupboard next to it is dry, cold at night and ventilated. There's nothing mysterious about the insect's choice.

The refrigerator, a textbook case

This is the most underestimated appliance. Many people assume a fridge is cold — it is, inside. At the back, the condenser continuously releases heat, and underneath the appliance the condensate evaporation tray provides a permanent supply of lukewarm water. To a cockroach, a fridge is a steady-flow source of warm water, sheltered, in a room full of food.

In established infestations, it's not unusual to find several hundred individuals of all life stages in the 20 centimetres between the back of the fridge and the wall. A simple narrow-beam torch shone into that gap, with the appliance pulled out, tells you more than three weeks of observation.

The clues that reveal a nest inside an appliance

Droppings, before the insects

A German cockroach is rarely seen during the day. It does, however, leave very recognisable traces: black specks the size of a grain of ground pepper, sometimes genuine brownish streaks on vertical surfaces. These droppings contain aggregation pheromones — they act as a beacon to gather the colony. The denser the marking, the closer you are to the harbourage.

The places to inspect first:

  • The top hinge of the dishwasher door, on the inner side of the control fascia
  • The area around the refrigerator door seal, at the bottom
  • Underneath the grounds container of an automatic coffee machine
  • The upper rear corner of a microwave, near the air vents
  • Inside the adjustable feet of floor-standing appliances

The smell

A dense colony gives off a distinctive odour, described as greasy, sweetish-musty, slightly nauseating. It comes from cuticular secretions and pheromones. If a kitchen smells "odd" near an appliance and no bin explains it, that alone justifies taking things apart.

Oothecae and moults

German cockroaches leave behind translucent casings (moults) and brown, ridged bean-shaped capsules 6 to 9 mm long: the oothecae, containing 30 to 40 eggs. The female carries her ootheca almost until hatching, which is why you find it exactly where she hides — that is, inside appliances. A powerful focused-beam torch and a small inspection mirror radically improve the quality of a kitchen examination.

Why "classic" treatments fail against these harbourages

Gel placed where the insect never goes

Baited insecticide gel remains by far the most effective method against Blattella germanica, and it's the one we use first. Its principle relies on transfer: the individual that has eaten the bait returns to the harbourage, where its droppings and its corpse contaminate the nymphs that don't venture out yet. This is known as the domino effect.

But that mechanism assumes one thing: that the gel spots sit on the insects' actual routes, right next to their harbourages. A bead of gel applied along the living-room skirting board or at the back of an empty cupboard will never be visited. We regularly see kitchens where thirty spots have been neatly placed… and not one on or inside an appliance.

Fogging, a false friend

The automatic "smoke bombs" or "foggers" sold in supermarkets have a structural flaw in this context: the aerosol settles on exposed surfaces and does not penetrate the sealed shell of a dishwasher. Worse, the repellent effect of certain pyrethroid active ingredients scatters the colony towards partition walls, service ducts and neighbouring flats. In a block of flats, it's the most reliable way to turn an apartment problem into a building problem.

ANSES, the body responsible for market authorisation of biocidal products in France, has repeatedly documented the domestic exposure risks associated with these devices and the incidents reported to the poison control centre network. The benefit/risk ratio, for a German cockroach infestation, is poor.

Pyrethroid resistance

For the past fifteen years or so, urban German cockroach populations have shown documented resistance to several insecticide families, particularly the pyrethroids used heavily in consumer products. Piling on more off-the-shelf aerosols against an already resistant population amounts to selecting for the most tolerant individuals. It's a well-known public health issue, comparable to what is seen with other pests.

A simple rule: if you're on your third product bought off the shelf and the population hasn't visibly dropped, switching products will get you nowhere. You need to change the method and the target.

The method: empty the appliances before treating

Step 1 — Isolate and move

First of all, cut the power supply to the appliance concerned and pull it away from the wall. It sounds obvious, but it's the step 90% of people skip. Almost all the useful information is behind and underneath.

On a dishwasher, removing the front kickplate (two screws, sometimes clips) is enough to expose the motor base. On a built-in oven, the bottom drawer unclips. On an automatic coffee machine, the grounds container and drip tray come out in three seconds.

Step 2 — Vacuum, don't spray

Mechanical vacuuming is the single most cost-effective move in the whole process. It removes, in one go, adults, nymphs, oothecae, pheromone-laden droppings and food residues. A workshop vacuum with a crevice tool does a markedly better job than a domestic stick vacuum, not least because it handles damp and greasy debris. The bag or tank must be emptied immediately into a sealed bag and taken out of the home.

After vacuuming, degreasing the accessible surfaces removes the pheromone trails that call survivors back. A professional kitchen degreaser will do; the goal isn't to sanitise but to erase the chemical markings.

Step 3 — Place the gel at the right points

Gel is applied in small dots the size of a match head, never as a continuous bead, with several dots per appliance:

  • Under the dishwasher's control fascia
  • On the rear upright of the refrigerator's motor compartment, out of reach of children and pets
  • In the internal corners of the extractor hood housing
  • On the side rails of a built-in oven, once completely cool

An important point: gel must never be applied to a surface that gets very hot (heating element, boiler, motor casing in operation), as the active ingredient degrades with heat, and it must not come into contact with food or crockery.

Step 4 — Measure, don't guess

Sticky monitoring traps placed flush with the floor, behind and under the appliances, give you a hard number: how many individuals caught in 72 hours, and at what stage. It's the only honest way to know whether the population is falling. A set of sticky cockroach traps put down before treatment, then checked at day 7, day 21 and day 45, is far more useful than the subjective impression that "we're seeing fewer of them."

The full life cycle of Blattella germanica takes roughly 100 days at 22 °C but drops to around 50 to 60 days at 30 °C — the usual temperature inside appliances. In other words, a whole generation can emerge in two months. No treatment can be judged before six weeks.

Preventing recolonisation

Close the routes

In a block of flats, cockroaches travel through service ducts, pipe runs and extractor hood housings connected to a shared mechanical ventilation system. Sealing the pipe openings under the sink and behind the dishwasher with expanding foam or acrylic sealant closes off the main motorways. It's a lasting measure, unlike a treatment.

Other habits that make a real difference:

  • Take the drip tray out of the coffee machine every two or three days and let it dry
  • Clean the dishwasher filter every week, and leave the door ajar after the cycle to let the moisture out
  • Dust the rear grille of the refrigerator twice a year
  • Don't store packaging cardboard (it travels with oothecae) under the sink or on top of the fridge
  • Clear crumbs out of the worktop grooves near appliances

The case of second-hand equipment

A significant share of infestations starts with a salvaged or second-hand appliance. Used refrigerators, microwaves and coffee machines are classic vectors, precisely because oothecae survive transport inside internal cavities. Before installing a second-hand appliance, partially dismantle it, vacuum it and inspect it with a torch — or leave it for 48 hours in an unheated, monitored space.

What falls to the building as a whole

In a block of flats, treating a single apartment in isolation has limited returns if the neighbouring homes are affected. The managing agent can have the common areas treated (ducts, bin rooms, boiler room) and coordinate a campaign across a whole stairwell. The decree on housing decency and the articles of the departmental sanitary regulations also set out the landlord's obligations regarding pest control: a tenant facing an infestation that predated their arrival should not have to bear the cost alone.
