Garden cockroaches vs domestic cockroaches: how to tell them apart during the 2026 heatwave

Warning signs of a real cockroach infestation

Even if garden cockroaches are likely in summer, certain signs should make you think of a domestic cockroach infestation:

• Droppings in small black grains (like ground coffee) along baseboards, under the sink, behind the fridge.
• Oothecae (small brown elongated capsules, 6–8 mm) in dark corners.
• Translucent molts (exuviae) left near transit areas.
• Musky, rancid smell, unusual and persistent.
• Nocturnal sightings in the kitchen or bathroom, especially after suddenly turning on the light.
• Several individuals together in the same corner, or fast escape into a crack.

What to do about garden cockroaches (no pesticides!)

The garden cockroach is useful and harmless. The best strategy is to limit the conditions that attract them close to the house, without insecticides:

1. Collect dead leaves and plant debris at the foot of hedges, flowerbeds, borders.
2. Aerate and turn the compost regularly to avoid stagnant humidity.
3. Keep the garden dry: moderate mulching, morning watering, drainage of damp areas.
4. Seal cracks in the terrace, low wall, door threshold, pipe passages.
5. Install fine mesh screens on low air vents and basement/crawl space windows.
6. Keep firewood and decaying plant piles away from the house.
7. Let natural predation happen: hedgehogs, shrews, birds, wall lizards feast on garden cockroaches. Killing them systematically unbalances the garden ecosystem.
